Renowned French actor and film producer Alain Delon, famed for his roles in some of the most iconic European films of the 1960s and '70s, has died at the age of 88. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his family announced his peaceful passing at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family, including his dog, Loubo. Delon had been battling poor health in recent years and suffered a stroke in 2019.

Delon's illustrious filmography includes masterpieces like Luchino Visconti's 'Rocco and His Brothers' (1960) and 'The Leopard' (1963), Rene Clement's 'Purple Noon' (1960), Michelangelo Antonioni's 'The Eclipse' (1962), Joseph Losey's 'Mr. Klein' (1976), and Jean-Pierre Melville's 'Le Samourai' (1967) and 'The Red Circle' (1970). His performances, often as enigmatic men marked by sudden bursts of violence and emotion, earned him the nickname 'the male Brigitte Bardot.'

Despite producing several dozen films and appearing in around 100, Delon received limited accolades during his lifetime. He won the French Cesar once for his role in Bertrand Blier's 1984 romance 'Our Story.' Honors bestowed upon him include a 1995 honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale and a 2019 honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes. Born on November 8, 1935, in Sceaux, a suburb of Paris, Delon experienced a tough childhood following his parents' separation and worked various odd jobs before making his acting breakthrough in 1960 with 'Purple Noon.'

Delon's significant breakthrough came with 'Purple Noon,' adapted by Rene Clement from Patricia Highsmith's novel 'The Talented Mr. Ripley.' Playing the charismatic yet malevolent antihero Tom Ripley, Delon's performance in the Mediterranean-set thriller received critical and box-office acclaim, leading some reviewers to herald him as 'the new James Dean.' Delon's enduring influence on cinema continues to be celebrated.
