The Delhi High Court has cleared the way for Delhi University to begin counting votes for its student union elections, provided the cleanup of campaigning materials is completed satisfactorily. The elections were held last month, but results were delayed due to campus defacement.
Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela noted that while efforts have been made to clean up college areas, some properties remain defaced. Consequently, candidates have been given a week to remove all posters and graffiti.
The court emphasized that the proceedings aim to instill awareness among students about preserving public property, with a desire for redemption, not punishment. The university has formed a reform committee to address accountability issues, with the vice-chancellor tasked with implementing its suggestions.
