The Gambegre assembly constituency in Meghalaya witnessed an impressive voter turnout of 90.84% during its recent by-election, according to an official report made on Wednesday.
Voting commenced at 7 AM under stringent security supervision and concluded at 4 PM. The Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya, B D R Tiwari, highlighted the significant participation in the West Garo Hills district's Gambegre poll.
Prominent candidates in the fray included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma's spouse, Mehtab Chandee Sangma, representing the NPP, alongside opposition from Congress, Trinamool Congress, BJP, and independent candidates. The by-election arose following MLA Saleng A Sangma's election to the Lok Sabha, with 32,254 voters participating, notably including 15,923 women, across 51 polling booths, 31 of which were marked as critical.
