The decision by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan to re-appoint Mohanan Kunnummal as Vice Chancellor of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) for five years has ignited a storm of controversy. Critics, including the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and educational groups, are calling the move undemocratic and contrary to established norms.
The re-appointment comes as Kunnummal's term was set to expire on October 25. In addition, Khan appointed him as interim VC of the University of Kerala. The decision, effective October 26, sidestepped the typical consultation process with the state government, raising the ire of state Health Minister Veena George and others.
The Federation of University Teachers' Association (FUTA) criticized Khan's unilateral action and announced a 'black day' protest. LDF and educational leaders underscore that Khan's approach undermines democratic values and sets a problematic precedent for university governance in Kerala.
