A recent report indicates a worrying trend: student suicides in India are rising at an alarming annual rate, outpacing both population growth and overall suicide rates. This revelation comes from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, unveiled at the Annual IC3 Conference and Expo 2024.

The report, titled 'Student Suicides: An Epidemic Sweeping India,' showcases that while overall suicides have increased by 2 percent annually, student suicides have surged by 4 percent. This stark rise continues despite likely underreporting of cases. Notably, male student suicides have decreased by 6 percent between 2021 and 2022, while female student suicides have seen a 7 percent increase during the same period.

The issue is compounded by discrepancies in data due to inconsistent reporting, especially in rural areas. High-stakes academic environments, particularly in states like Rajasthan, contribute significantly to these numbers. The IC3 Institute emphasizes the need for a comprehensive counseling system within educational institutions to address mental health challenges and reduce competitive pressures that lead to such tragedies.
