Zomato, India's prominent food delivery service, has unveiled a pioneering Delivery Partner Well-being Framework. This initiative underscores a concerted effort to elevate the well-being of gig workers—an often-ignored segment in the platform economy. The framework was meticulously developed alongside worker rights experts, social researchers, and industry bodies.
The comprehensive framework strategically targets five pivotal areas: financial, social, physical, mental, and professional well-being, integrating nine essential elements such as earnings, delivery experience, grievance mechanisms, health, and diversity. Each element is dissected into sub-elements to ensure an exhaustive and nuanced evaluation.
Zomato's CEO, Rakesh Ranjan, expressed hopes that the framework could become a benchmark for other gig-based platforms, fostering a collective drive to uplift delivery partners' standards of well-being across India. Reviews from various stakeholders, including Social Compact and Indiatech.org, have highlighted the framework's potential impact on policy-making and corporate practices in a rapidly expanding gig economy.
