India is pushing for strict adherence to 'Rules of Origin' during its FTA negotiations with the UK to protect the domestic automobile sector, said Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal on Tuesday.
Barthwal emphasized that these rules should ensure no negative impact on the Indian automobile market while still opening it up. He noted that these regulations would prevent the dumping of goods labeled as originating from FTA countries but produced elsewhere, ensuring a level playing field.
The ongoing India-UK talks began in January 2022 and cover multiple sectors, including services and investments. Both nations are negotiating unresolved issues, with India seeking greater access for its professionals and goods, while the UK aims for reduced import duties on items like scotch whiskey and electric vehicles.
