A devastating bus accident on National Highway 93 near Kanwarpur village in Uttar Pradesh has claimed 17 lives, as two more children succumbed to injuries during treatment, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The crash took place when a roadways bus hit a van from behind while overtaking it, resulting in the deaths of 15 people, including women and children who were traveling in the van on Friday. According to District Magistrate Ashish Kumar, 16 individuals are still receiving treatment in hospitals in Hathras and Aligarh.
The victims were en route to Agra from Hathras after attending a mourning ritual in the Sasni area. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed local officials to provide relief measures and announced financial aid for the victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu also expressed condolences.
