In a significant milestone for the South Asian opera scene, Operalia - The World Opera Competition, will make its debut in India this September. The prestigious event, founded by acclaimed tenor Placido Domingo, will take place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai from September 15 to 21. The NCPA has long been a sanctuary for opera enthusiasts in India, presenting full-scale productions and exclusive opera screenings over the years.

The competition will feature 32 participants from 18 countries, vying for top honors accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of India, the country's only professional orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Domingo. The jury, chaired by Domingo, includes distinguished international opera managers and casting directors. This event acknowledges NCPA's reputation in the opera world, highlighting its ability to organize such a grand event.

NCPA Chairman Khushroo N. Suntook expressed hope that the event could inspire more Indian singers to pursue opera. The center's long-standing association with The Metropolitan Opera in New York and its hosting of exclusive opera screenings further establish Mumbai as a burgeoning hub for this classical art form. The Stuart-Liff Collection at NCPA also offers a treasure trove of Western classical music and opera literature, enriching the city's cultural landscape.
