In a significant move to enhance the welfare of marginalized workers across the country, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has decided to extend the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to disadvantaged groups. The Ministry has sent a formal letter to all state governments, urging the inclusion of migrant workers, construction workers, beedi workers, cine workers, non-coal mine workers, contract labourers, and other unorganized workers in the housing scheme.

This step aligns with the recent Union Cabinet approval to extend PMAY's implementation for an additional five years, from FY 2024-25 to 2028-29. The extension aims to provide 2 crore additional homes to eligible beneficiaries, addressing the housing needs of economically vulnerable workers. The Ministry highlighted that the inclusion of these workers in PMAY is a matter of social justice and vital for improving their living conditions.

Moreover, the Ministry announced that the Management Information System (MIS) portal, launched on 21st August 2024 for Building and Construction and Migrant Workers, is now fully functional. This portal will help in data collection and analysis, covering fund utilization and worker coverage under various central and state social security schemes, including insurance, health benefits, and housing programs.

This centralized data management system will assist State Governments and Union Territories in making informed decisions, thereby developing more effective welfare policies for these underprivileged workers. The Ministry has directed Welfare Commissioners in various states to collaborate closely with local authorities to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives.

To monitor the progress, the Ministry of Labour and Employment is conducting a series of regional meetings with states and UTs from 29th August to 4th October, 2024. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the lives of millions of workers, ensuring they receive the housing and social security benefits they deserve.
