In a move to safeguard the domestic industry, India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended the imposition of an anti-dumping duty on Chinese aluminium foil. The foil, commonly used for food packaging, has been subject to a probe following complaints from local manufacturers, such as Hindalco Industries and Ravi Raj Foils.
The investigation specifically looked into aluminium foil imports up to 80 microns, excluding those below 5.5 microns for non-capacitor applications. Preliminary findings indicated that the influx of cheap aluminium foil from China has adversely impacted the domestic market in terms of both volume and price.
The recommended anti-dumping duties range from USD 619 to USD 873 per tonne. The final decision rests with the finance ministry. These measures come under the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to ensure fair trading practices and protect local industries.
