A tragic stabbing attack at a festival in Solingen, Germany, on Friday night resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, according to police.
The incident was reported by Bild newspaper, which stated that a man had randomly attacked festival-goers at approximately 9:45 p.m. (1945 GMT). Witnesses claim that the attacker remains at large. The paper reported at least three deaths and numerous injuries.
Solingen Mayor Tim-Oliver Kurzbach confirmed the casualties and injuries but withheld further details. He expressed his profound grief, saying, “It tears my heart apart that there was an attack on our city. I have tears in my eyes when I think of those we have lost. I pray for all those who are still fighting for their lives.”
The attack took place during celebrations for the town's 650th anniversary at the Fronhof market square, where live bands were performing. Solingen, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, was struck by the rare incident.
Germany has seen sporadic instances of fatal stabbings and shootings, including the stabbing of a policeman in Mannheim in June and an attack on a train in 2021. In response to such events, the German government is considering stricter regulations on carrying knives in public.
