The Indian government has called for industry proposals to establish e-commerce export hubs (ECEH) aimed at expediting seamless export clearances, according to a trade notice issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Proposals will define software requirements and operations, with draft modalities already outlined. The government is planning to launch a pilot phase of 10-15 hubs in public-private-partnership mode, focusing on predictability, swift turnaround times, and enhanced re-import processes for returns and rejects.

Currently, India's e-commerce exports stand at approximately USD 5 billion, a fraction of China's USD 300 billion. The initiative aims to elevate this to USD 50-100 billion in the coming years. A report by GTRI indicates potential for growth to USD 350 billion by 2030, despite current banking obstacles. ECEHs will support small producers, facilitate customs clearance, and provide essential services like warehousing, returns processing, and testing.
