Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday emphasized that India is not against e-commerce companies but insists on fairness and honesty in their operations.
Speaking a day after flagging concerns about certain practices, Goyal stressed the need for online businesses to provide a fair chance for competition.
He voiced concerns about predatory pricing by e-commerce firms and the potential social disruption their unchecked growth could cause, particularly affecting small retailers. Goyal reiterated India's openness to foreign direct investment and technology, but insisted on fair play for all involved parties.
Highlighting the benefits of the e-commerce sector such as speed and convenience, Goyal made it clear that the government wants these companies to serve the people of India while ensuring fair competition.
