India has raised its objections to the European Union's carbon tax, stating it undermines the principles of equity and hampers fair global trade.
Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal noted that countries in the Global South are grappling with the dual challenges of developing climate strategies while responding to unilateral measures such as the CBAM (carbon border adjustment mechanism).
Barthwal emphasized that such measures do not honor the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities, making global trade inequitable. India has consistently highlighted these concerns, particularly the impact on its exports, and is in ongoing discussions with the EU to find a resolution.
