The Karnataka cabinet on Monday approved the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission's recommendations, effective August 1, official sources have confirmed.

The Chief Minister is slated to announce the pay hike, benefiting more than seven lakh state government employees, in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Headed by former chief secretary K. Sudhakar Rao, the commission has recommended a 27.5 percent increase in the basic salary, which will cost the state an additional Rs 17,440.15 crore annually. The decision follows pressure from the Karnataka State Government Employees Association, which had planned an indefinite strike from August. Earlier, former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai approved a 17 percent interim salary hike in March 2023. The current Siddaramaiah administration is expected to add another 10.5 percent to this, amounting to a total 27.5 percent increase, aligning with the 7th Pay Commission's recommendation.
