TRAI Proposes THEA for Spectrum Innovation in 95 GHz to 3 THz Range

TRAI has recommended a new experimental authorization called 'Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation' (THEA) for spectrum in the 95 GHz to 3 THz range. The goal is to foster R&D, trials, and marketing of innovative technologies. Indian entities, including academic institutes, will be eligible for THEA, which has a five-year term, extendable by five years.

In a significant move, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday proposed the introduction of 'Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation' (THEA) for spectrum ranging from 95 GHz to 3 THz.

Designed to propel Research and Development, technology trials, and innovative demonstrations, THEA aims to facilitate R&D, both indoors and outdoors. The initiative covers the production and direct sale of experimental devices in this spectrum range.

Eligibility extends to a wide range of Indian entities such as academic institutions, R&D laboratories, and public sector units. THEA comes with an initial five-year authorisation period, extendable in five-year increments. This initiative is expected to bolster the 'Make in India' campaign, promoting the development of breakthrough technologies in the Tera Hertz band.

Additionally, TRAI recommended permitting the 77-81 GHz band for automotive radar systems to enhance vehicular safety.
