Rory McIlroy's Dramatic Downturn at Abu Dhabi Championship
Rory McIlroy's performance at the Abu Dhabi Championship was hindered by a double bogey on the final hole of the third round, leaving him five shots behind leader Paul Waring. Despite being nine strokes off after two rounds, McIlroy rallied but faltered with an untimely mistake on the 18th hole.
Rory McIlroy's aspirations at the Abu Dhabi Championship took a hit on Saturday when an errant drive on the final hole cost him a clear shot at the lead. The double bogey setback left him trailing leader Paul Waring by five strokes as the tournament heads into the final day.
Initially positioned nine strokes behind after two rounds, McIlroy sparked a comeback, reducing the gap to just three shots in the third round. However, his drive on the par-5 18th hole veered sharply, ricocheting off rocks and submerging into water, which led to a costly penalty.
Despite an impressive run of six birdies, McIlroy's final score of 3-under 69 set him back, placing him tied for 13th. As he aims for his sixth Race to Dubai title, McIlroy remains hopeful, albeit facing a significant challenge ahead in Sunday's final round.
