New Zealand delivered a stunning performance in Bengaluru, defeating India in the first Test match to modify the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings significantly. The Kiwis easily chased down a target of 107 runs, boosting their win-loss percentage to 44.44% and advancing from sixth to fourth in the rankings, according to the ICC.
While India retains its top position in the leaderboard, the defeat lessens its grip on a place in the WTC final, as their win percentage slips to 68.06%. India faces two more Tests against New Zealand and a five-match series with Australia, who are close contenders alongside Sri Lanka with 62.50% and 55.56%, respectively.
In the chase, Indian bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, made some inroads but ultimately, Will Young and Rachin Ravindra anchored New Zealand's victory. Previously, India's batting had collapsed after a strong start, despite substantial partnerships from Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant, succumbing to pressure under the new ball tactics from the Kiwi bowlers.
