Legendary Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has issued an unconditional apology for staying silent during recent civil unrest against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This move might smooth the way for a farewell Test match at home against South Africa, earmarked as his final game.
The star all-rounder aims to mark his career conclusion with the opening Test against South Africa, set for October 21 in Mirpur. Although there's a second Test in Chittagong, Shakib plans to play only the first, as he will fly to the USA thereafter, where he resides with his family.
Highlighting his political ties, Shakib, previously a Member of Parliament, wrote on Facebook expressing sorrow for his silence. He was also accused in a murder case during the unrest but maintained innocence, having been in Canada at the time. His apology and political clarification might ensure he gets to bid farewell on the cricket field.
