French Journalist Accused of Terrorism Apology by Sahel Nations
Prosecutors in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have accused French journalist Wassim Nasr of being an 'apologist for terrorism' due to his analysis of jihadist attacks. Nasr is known for his expert commentary on Islamist insurgencies in the Sahel region. He faces charges of criminal conspiracy and complicity in acts of terrorism.
In a sweeping move, prosecutors in junta-led Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have initiated investigations against French journalist and researcher Wassim Nasr. Nasr, who works for France 24, is accused of being an 'apologist for terrorism' due to his analytical work on jihadist attacks in the Sahel region.
His detailed review of a rare jihadist attack in Mali's capital, Bamako, has attracted accusations of providing 'blatant acts of publicity and support' for jihadist activities, particularly pointing to attacks in Bamako and Djibo. An investigation has now been launched, citing charges of criminal conspiracy and complicity in acts of terrorism.
Nasr, who resides in France, declined to comment on the accusations. Instead, he expressed solidarity with Sahelian journalists facing oppression. The incidence underscores the strained relations between these Sahel nations and Western allies, spotlighting their shift towards Russia.
