BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla stood firm in defense of the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, facing criticism post the second Test between India and Bangladesh. The match saw two days abandoned, one without rain during play hours.
Shukla underscored the 'heritage ground' status of Green Park, recalling its 80-year history as a key Test center. Citing ESPNcricinfo, he noted, 'Criticism is something we are used to in BCCI administration. Whether matches are allocated or not, criticism follows. The issue is the ground's age and its historical significance as a permanent Test fixture, alongside Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai.'
Although the two match days saw minimal rain, preceding weather disrupted play. Shukla highlighted that modern technologies to handle rainwater weren't available when Green Park was built, but are now being implemented in newer venues. Ongoing discussions aim to upgrade the drainage system, contingent on an agreement with the UP government as Green Park is managed by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association. 'Rain is nature's prerogative; Kanpur and Green Park shouldn't be blamed,' Shukla concluded.
