English School from Manipur has triumphed in the Junior Boys category at the 63rd Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, overcoming Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School from Meghalaya. The match, held in New Delhi, saw both teams level at 1-1 in regulation time, with the Manipur side eventually claiming victory 4-3 in a sudden death tie-breaker.
Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, the Chief of the Air Staff and Chairman of the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society, presented the prestigious trophy to the winners. Accompanying him was Harmilan Bains, the 2022 Asian Games double silver medalist, who served as the Guest of Honour. Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari lauded the tournament as a remarkable platform for nurturing young football talent and emphasized the commitment to elevating the standards of grassroots football in India.
Throughout the game, Meghalaya appeared more dominant and creative but struggled to capitalize on their chances. The match had its turning point when Namdigong put T.G. English School ahead. Despite facing a resilient Meghalaya, who equalized through Banpliebok Khongjoh, the match concluded in Manipur's favor during the nail-biting penalty shootout. Teams from various categories showcased their best, making the tournament a significant success in promoting young athletes.
