Ostapenko and Kichenok Clinch Women's Doubles Title at U.S. Open
Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok secured their first women's Grand Slam doubles title at the U.S. Open, defeating Zhang Shaui and Kristina Mladenovic. The victory follows their finalist appearance at this year’s Australian Open. They dominated the match, winning 6-4, 6-3, and not losing a single set throughout the tournament.
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok captured the women's doubles crown at the U.S. Open after defeating Chinese-French pairing Zhang Shaui and Kristina Mladenovic in a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Friday.
This win marks the first women's Grand Slam doubles title for former French Open singles champion Ostapenko and Kichenok, who were also finalists at this year's Australian Open. "We are a really great team, and I think it was just an amazing two weeks," Ostapenko remarked during the on-court trophy presentation.
After an early advantage, Ostapenko and Kichenok successfully defended multiple break points and ultimately clinched the first set when Zhang double-faulted. Despite a 2-0 lead by Zhang and Mladenovic in the second set, the seventh-seeded Ostapenko and Kichenok turned the game around with crucial breaks to secure the match.
