Angola's Last-Minute Triumph: Upsetting Ghana in AFCON 2025 Qualifiers

Angola produced the first shock of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by scoring a last-minute goal to defeat Ghana. The match was one of seven played across the continent on Thursday.

Former African champions Algeria and Tunisia both clinched home wins, while Burundi, the Central African Republic, Congo, and Guinea Bissau also secured victories. These results marked the beginning of the group phase competition to decide the finalists for the December 2025 tournament in Morocco. Angolan substitute Milson capitalized on a defensive error to score in the third minute of stoppage time during the Group F bout in Kumasi.

Ghana's strong performance, spearheaded by Mohammed Kudus, couldn't break through Angola's resilient defense. Burundi's 3-2 away win over Malawi in Group L was a standout, with Mokono Eldinho scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute. Riyad Mahrez's return to Algeria's lineup saw him miss a penalty but later contribute to their first goal against Equatorial Guinea in Group E, with Houssem-Eddine Aouar netting the rebound. Amine Gouiri added another goal to seal the victory.
