Top seed Jannik Sinner broke through Daniil Medvedev's defenses to win 6-2 1-6 6-1 6-4 in a seesawing U.S. Open quarter-final on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, stunning pundits and fans as momentum swung dramatically from set to set.
Sinner previously beat Medvedev in this year's Australian Open final, and once again left the Russian disappointed at a Grand Slam, sealing the match with a decisive forehand winner. Despite Medvedev's past triumph in the 2021 U.S. Open and his recent victory over Sinner at Wimbledon, he was plagued by 57 unforced errors.
Medvedev's inconsistency proved costly, especially in the first set where he doubled the number of unforced errors compared to Sinner. Although he fought back in the second set, winning a crucial 24-shot rally, the momentum shifted back to Sinner, who dominated the third set and ultimately secured his place in the semi-finals. Sinner will next face Britain's Jack Draper for a spot in the final.
