American Frances Tiafoe reached the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open for the third successive year on Sunday, securing a victory over Alexei Popyrin with a score of 6-4 7-6(3) 2-6 6-3.
Tiafoe, who hopes to end a 21-year U.S. drought in men's majors, had to dig deep to outlast the powerful Popyrin. Despite hitting 24 aces, the Australian conceded nine double faults and some crucial unforced errors, which proved costly.
Tiafoe will next face Bulgarian ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals, as he continues his pursuit of a major title.
