Kazakhstan Upsets Germany, United States Soars in United Cup Tennis Thriller
Kazakhstan eliminated Germany from the United Cup while the United States secured a last-four spot by defeating China. Alexander Zverev's injury bolstered Kazakhstan's advantage as Elena Rybakina secured a win. The U.S. progressed with victories by Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz over Chinese opponents. Poland and Britain also advanced.
In a stunning turn of events, Kazakhstan ended Germany's title defence at the United Cup on Wednesday. The United States, the inaugural champions, also made it to the last four by overcoming China in the mixed team tennis tournament.
Elena Rybakina set the tone for Kazakhstan with a decisive 6-3 6-1 victory over Laura Siegemund in the opening match of the knockout stages. Germany's hopes were further dented when Alexander Zverev withdrew from the quarter-final due to a bicep strain, forcing Daniel Masur to fill in. Despite a strong start, Masur was defeated by Alexander Shevchenko, who staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 6-7(5) 6-2 6-2 victory, giving Kazakhstan an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz secured singles victories against their Chinese adversaries, propelling the U.S. to the semifinals. Gauff, overcoming an erratic performance with fewer unforced errors than her opponent, claimed a victory over Zhang Shuai 7-6(4) 6-2. Fritz followed suit, defeating Zhang Zhizhen 6-4 6-4. Elsewhere, Poland advanced with the prowess of Iga Swiatek, and Britain booked their place in the quarter-finals with Katie Boulter's convincing win against Australia.
