In a surprising turn of events at the Brisbane International, defending champion Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire from his semifinal match against Jiri Lehecka on Saturday. Dimitrov, hindered by a groin and hip injury, decided to end the match while trailing 6-4, 4-4 at the Pat Rafter Arena.
The world No. 10 initially left the court for treatment and attempted a comeback, but ultimately his physical condition left him unable to continue. This forfeiture catapulted the 23-year-old Jiri Lehecka, already an Adelaide International titleholder, into his fourth ATP final.
With the Australian Open around the corner, Dimitrov hopes to recover quickly. "I hope it's nothing serious for Grigor; the first set and first half of the second had a good level," remarked Lehecka post-match. "I'd like to finish the match in a different way, but hopefully, he'll be all right."
