Emma Navarro overcame her usual stage fright to secure a stunning victory over defending champion Coco Gauff at the U.S. Open. Despite past struggles on big courts, Navarro's confident and aggressive play landed her a spot in the quarter-finals, marking her significant growth as a player.
Emma Navarro, often overwhelmed by the grandeur of major courts, found her stride on Sunday at the U.S. Open. The American, in her first appearance at Arthur Ashe Stadium, delivered a stunning performance to defeat defending champion Coco Gauff 6-3 4-6 6-3, marking her advance to the quarter-finals.
Navarro, who had never progressed beyond the first round at Flushing Meadows, surprised even herself with her composure. 'I've been on big courts before and felt totally overwhelmed, but not today,' she told reporters. 'The energy in New York is unmatched; it was an amazing experience.'
Capitalizing on Gauff's errors and serving struggles, Navarro's aggressive strategy paid off. Her constant attack on Gauff's second serve and improved decision-making showcased her growth and confidence, leading her to a career high of world number 12. 'I now believe I can compete with the best players worldwide,' Navarro stated.
