Carlos Bocanegra, who played a key role in shaping Atlanta United into an MLS champion in just its second season, was dismissed Wednesday from his role as technical director.

The decision comes as Atlanta United endures another disappointing season, currently sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference with only eight wins in 27 matches. Bocanegra's dismissal leaves seven games remaining in the season. President and CEO Garth Lagerwey will take over his duties on an interim basis.

Atlanta United is also operating under interim coach Rob Valentino, following the departure of Gonzalo Pineda in early June. This marks a significant overhaul for the club as it approaches the 2025 season. 'While we continue to fight for a playoff spot, this gives us a clean slate to assess vacancies in our sporting operation,' Lagerwey said in a statement.

Bocanegra joined Atlanta United as technical director in 2015 and played a critical role in assembling the high-scoring roster that clinched the MLS Cup in 2018. Despite strong attendance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, recent performances have failed to meet expectations. Club owner Arthur Blank expressed gratitude for Bocanegra's contributions but acknowledged the need for a new direction.
