In a significant move, Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich was appointed captain of Germany's national soccer team on Monday. This decision follows the retirement of his predecessor, Ilkay Gündogan, and other senior players after Euro 2024.
Kimmich will be supported by Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz as vice-captains. The leadership change comes ahead of Germany's Nations League games against Hungary and the Netherlands.
Kimmich has frequently stepped in as captain in the past but will now take on the role permanently. Despite notable retirements, including Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller, coach Julian Nagelsmann has emphasized continuity in the squad, naming only one uncapped player. Marc-André ter Stegen will replace Neuer as the starting goalkeeper as Germany gears up for the 2026 World Cup.
