The 20th-seeded Tiafoe reached the final four at Flushing Meadows for the second time in three years when his quarterfinal opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, retired due to an injury in the fourth set, trailing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1.
Earlier, Fritz advanced in a more gratifying manner, as he celebrated an errant forehand from No. 4 Alexander Zverev going wide. This victory sees Fritz, a 26-year-old from California, reach a major semifinal for the first time, setting up a showdown against longtime friend Tiafoe. This contest is the first semifinal between a pair of American men since 2005.
