Upsets and Triumphs: Drama Unfolds at U.S. Open
Coco Gauff's U.S. Open title defense ended with a loss to Emma Navarro, who moved into the quarter-finals. In men's action, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe advanced, following Novak Djokovic's early exit. Aryna Sabalenka also progressed in the women's draw.
Coco Gauff's U.S. Open title defense came to an unexpected end as she lost to fellow American Emma Navarro 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the fourth round on Sunday. Navarro's aggressive play earned her a spot in the quarter-finals, marking a shocking defeat for the reigning women's champion at Flushing Meadows.
Despite Gauff's resilient efforts to bounce back after the first set, 19 double faults and numerous unforced errors sealed her fate. "Mentally and emotionally, I gave it my all," said the 20-year-old, who will now drop out of the top five in world rankings. "Emma played really well; she did everything well, I thought."
Meanwhile, in men's action, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe advanced to the quarter-finals. Zverev, still in pursuit of his first Grand Slam title, overcame Brandon Nakashima. Fritz defeated Casper Ruud, and Tiafoe took advantage of Djokovic and Alcaraz's early exits to keep America's hopes alive for a homegrown champion.
