In a dramatic turn of events, NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) secured their first-ever Durand Cup title by defeating defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) on penalties after coming back from a two-goal deficit. The gripping final was held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
MBSG initially took a strong 2-0 lead in the first half, courtesy of goals from Jason Cummings and Sahal Abdul Samad. NEUFC fought back in the second half with goals from Alaaeddine Ajaraie and Guillermo Fernandez. Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh emerged as the hero by saving two spot-kicks to clinch the victory.
NEUFC's tactical prowess was evident with strategic substitutions that turned the game around. Jithin M.S., a key player, set up crucial goals and kept up relentless pressure on MBSG's defense. The thrilling match ended in penalties, with NEUFC's players converting all their spot-kicks, earning the club a historic win and a purse of INR 60,00,000.
