Frances Tiafoe held off fellow American Aleksandar Kovacevic to claim a 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 win in the opening round of the U.S. Open on Monday. Tiafoe, seeded 20th, maintained his composure under pressure to advance as he aims to deliver on his promise of winning his home Grand Slam. His impressive semi-finals run two years ago has cemented his status in the sport.

Kovacevic, a New York native making his debut at the U.S. Open, faltered while serving in the 10th game of the first set, allowing Tiafoe to capitalize and secure the opener. Tiafoe extended his lead with a commanding service return for a 4-2 advantage in the second set, securing a 2-0 lead when Kovacevic's backhand shot went long.

In the third set, Kovacevic rallied, delivering an exceptional around-the-net forehand winner that swayed some of the crowd's support. He broke Tiafoe's serve twice to force a fourth set. However, Tiafoe remained resolute, breaking Kovacevic for a 6-5 lead in the fourth set and converting his fifth match point to clinch the victory. Despite facing challenges this season, Tiafoe has regained form, reaching the Cincinnati Open final to re-enter the top 20. He now faces Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan in the second round.
