After pistol shooter Manu Bhaker captured attention with her dual bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics 2024, focus is now shifting towards Avani Lekhara, the historical figure from the Tokyo Paralympics. Both athletes debuted at the Olympics held in Japan.

Shooter Avani Lekhara made history by becoming the first Indian woman to secure dual medals at a single Paralympics, bagging gold in the 10m air rifle and bronze in the 50m rifle three-position SH1 category during the Tokyo Games. This category comprises shooters with lower limb impairments affecting standing or sitting positions.

In an exclusive conversation with SAI Media, Avani expressed mutual admiration and respect for Manu Bhaker, who contributed two of India's six medals at Paris 2024. Avani said, 'I feel proud that we are both shooters. When I won two medals in Tokyo, it was a new awakening for women in sports in India. Manu did the same, and I hope more such barriers are broken.' The 22-year-old, supported by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), noted that this phase has helped her gain self-confidence and maturity.

Avani's composure signals a maturing athlete. She stated, 'It's not about money or fame; the greatest takeaway post-Tokyo has been my improved self-confidence. From a shy, introverted girl to my current self, much has changed. The recognition and support I've received is the real success for me.'

As Avani focuses on the upcoming Paralympics in Paris, she also harbors dreams of becoming a judge, having recently completed her BA LLB graduation. Despite a challenging journey following a car accident at 12, she aims to inspire more awareness and visibility for para sports in India.

India is sending its largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes to compete in 12 sports at the Paris Paralympics, including archery, athletics, badminton, and more.
