New Zealand pace veteran and Test skipper Tim Southee has reassured fans that neither Kane Williamson nor Devon Conway will miss significant cricket despite opting out of central contracts. The duo, along with Finn Allen, recently declined contracts with New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Awards on Wednesday, Southee acknowledged the complex decisions players face between country and franchise cricket. He stated, "The franchise leagues are growing, and collaboration between international boards and leagues would be beneficial, especially for Test cricket, which many players still consider the pinnacle." He emphasized that Williamson and Conway remain committed to New Zealand's upcoming nine-Test schedule.
Conway has signed a casual playing agreement, making himself available for all long-format matches and warm-ups ahead of the Champions Trophy in February. This flexibility allows these top players to balance commitments, ensuring their presence in crucial matches. New Zealand's relatively light 2024-25 season allows Williamson to focus on the World Test Championship and play in SA20. Despite opting out of the central contract, Williamson reiterated his long-term dedication to the Blackcaps.
