Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya came agonizingly close to breaking the men's 800 metres world record at the Lausanne Diamond League, missing the mark by just two-tenths of a second. Wanyonyi, who celebrated his 20th birthday during the Paris Olympics, completed the race in one minute 41.11 seconds. The current world record of 1:40.91 was set by Kenya's David Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympics.

Chasing the record under ideal 25 C conditions, Wanyonyi matched Wilson Kipketer's 1997 time, making it the second-fastest run in history. 'I'm so happy to have run the world lead. I loved the crowd, and I hope for the best in Silesia,' Wanyonyi said, eyeing another attempt on Sunday in Poland.

The event witnessed other remarkable performances, notably Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen who won the men's 1,500m in 3:27.83 and Chase Jackson of the U.S., who won the women's shot put with a 20.64 metres throw. Jamaica's Rasheed Broadbell defeated American Grant Holloway in the men's 110m hurdles, while Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece clinched the long jump title.
