South African cricket star Lizelle Lee has committed to the Hobart Hurricanes for another two seasons, according to a new contract signed ahead of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) draft.

Lee, who retired from international cricket in 2022-23, was indispensable to the Hurricanes last season, becoming the leading run-scorer with 409 runs at an average of 37.18 and a strike rate of 146.07, including an unbeaten 101 against the Melbourne Renegades. 'I feel like the team made some strong progress last season, and I am looking forward to playing my role and natural game as we look to bring Tasmania and the Hurricanes their first WBBL trophy,' Lee stated.

Cricket Tasmania's General Manager Salliann Beams expressed enthusiasm about Lee's continued partnership with Elyse Villani at the top of the order, describing them as 'arguably the most experienced and talented opening pairing in the WBBL.' Beams highlighted Lee's versatility with overseas pre-signing and endorsed the strategic decision to retain her ahead of the draft.

'She can change the game with the bat and in the field, having done so time and time again in international cricket for South Africa and in the WBBL,' Beams added. Head coach Jude Coleman has indicated the team's interest in acquiring another top-order batter during the draft.

The Hurricanes also retain the rights to South African pacer Shabnim Ismail, who claimed 13 wickets last season, further bolstering their squad.
