Former cricketer and chief selector Faruque Ahmed has been elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), succeeding Nazmul Hasan Papon, who resigned due to political unrest in the country.

The BCB held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to elect the 58-year-old Ahmed. Papon, in his fourth term, stepped down while in London with his wife amid political instability sparked by student protests against job quotas.

The Awami League regime, led by Sheikh Hasina, was toppled, leading to widespread violence despite an interim government taking charge. Papon, also an Awami League MP since 2009, left Dhaka on August 5 along with 16 other directors.

Faruque Ahmed, who previously resigned as a selector due to systemic disagreements, aims to create a smoother operational system for the board. He served as BCB chief selector for two terms and played seven ODIs for Bangladesh.

The National Sports Council appointed Ahmed and Nazmul Abedin as new directors, replacing Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam. Their appointment was followed by a board meeting attended by several former cricketers and directors.

Addressing star player Shakib Al Hasan, Ahmed said the board will discuss his future and potential new rules on player conduct during tours. Ahmed also expressed support for Tamim Iqbal's continued involvement, provided his fitness is adequate.

Regarding the national head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, Ahmed reiterated his unwillingness to retain him, citing a need to review the contract and consider alternatives.
