Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from the national team after a distinguished career spanning 15 years and 124 appearances. The 38-year-old athlete will continue his club career at Bayern Munich.

Neuer, who debuted for Germany in 2009 and played a key role in winning the 2014 World Cup, revealed that his final match for the national team was a 2-1 extra-time loss to Spain in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024. Despite some temptation to stay on for the 2026 World Cup, Neuer decided to retire after consulting with family and friends.

This decision might pave the way for Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen to become Germany's starting goalkeeper. Neuer follows midfielder Ilkay Gündogan, who also retired from international duty this week, and forward Thomas Müller, who stepped down last month, citing the burdens of a demanding schedule.
