Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli and Australia's Steve Smith are eager to make their mark in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series where runs will be 'at a premium,' according to Australian legend Matthew Hayden.

Hayden, a celebrated opener of his time, emphasized that Kohli and Smith have unique styles but are pivotal to their teams' success this summer.

'Cricket is a game of momentum, and these two players, now in the later stages of their careers, will be keen to dominate,' Hayden stated during the Ceat Cricket Rating Awards.

India and Australia are set to clash in a five-Test series starting November 22 in Perth. Hayden remarked that it's hard to predict which team has the edge, citing that runs will be crucial.

'Some dependable players like Pujara have retired. Exciting or not, they were effective,' he added.

Australia, winless against India since the 2014-15 series, are eager to reclaim their former glory. Nathan Lyon aims to challenge Yashasvi Jaiswal, an emerging key player for India. Hayden praised Jaiswal but noted he must adapt to Australian conditions.

Additionally, Australia faces the difficulty of filling David Warner's shoes after his recent retirement. Hayden questioned the decision to move Steve Smith to the opener's slot, citing concerns about altering proven positions.
