Atletico Madrid have secured the services of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on a five-year deal, both LaLiga and the Premier League clubs confirmed on Wednesday.
Gallagher, who had spent his formative years at Chelsea since joining at the age of eight, will now be with Atletico until 2029. Media reports indicate that the Spanish club paid 42 million euros for his transfer. Chelsea extended their best wishes to Gallagher in an official statement on their website.
The midfielder spent a significant part of his senior career on loan, featuring at clubs like West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace, before marking his Chelsea debut in 2022. Last season, he made 37 Premier League starts and captained the team amid injuries to regular captains Reece James and Ben Chilwell. As a national player, Gallagher debuted for England in 2021, accumulating 18 caps and participating in Euro 2024.
The Spanish club will unveil Gallagher and their other new signings, including Julian Alvarez, Robin Le Normand, and Alexander Sorloth, in an event at the Metropolitano stadium on Wednesday. Atletico's spending spree sums up to around 200 million euros this season, with hopes to rebound after a lackluster 2-2 draw against Villarreal as they prepare to host Girona this Sunday.
