Yann Sommer, Switzerland's premier goalkeeper for the past decade, has officially retired from the national team. At the age of 35, Sommer aims to dedicate more time to his Inter Milan career. The announcement came via the Swiss soccer federation, indicating Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund will likely ascend as the primary 'keeper.
Sommer's illustrious career includes appearances in three World Cups and three European Championships, debuting in 2012. His final national outing was a penalty shootout loss to England following a 1-1 draw in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals held last month in Germany.
Among Sommer's memorable moments is saving Kylian Mbappé's penalty, clinching a shootout victory against France at Euro 2020 after a thrilling 3-3 draw. On the club front, he enjoyed success, winning Serie A with Inter Milan in his debut season and securing league titles in Germany with Bayern Munich and in Switzerland with Basel.
The 26-year-old Gregor Kobel, already with five caps, including a victory over Serbia at the 2022 World Cup, is poised for his new role. Switzerland's next matches are against Denmark and Euro 2024 champions Spain in September's UEFA Nations League top-tier group.
