In a significant boost for India's cricket roster, veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami is eyeing a return to competitive play. Shami, who has been recuperating post-ankle surgery, is expected to reappear for his domestic team Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.

Sources indicate Shami will likely participate in either one or both of Bengal's opening away games against UP on October 11 and at home against Bihar on October 18. Though the New Zealand Test series looms large, beginning on October 19, Shami is targeted to play at least one Test match, marking his re-entry into international cricket before the Australian tour.

The 34-year-old had been sidelined since the ODI World Cup final in November last year, owing to his surgery undergone in the UK in February. Recent Instagram posts show Shami engaged in light training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, heralding his potential availability.
