Sport & Recreation Minister Chris Bishop has praised New Zealand’s Olympic team for achieving the country’s best-ever results at the Paris Games, marking a historic milestone with an exceptional performance.

The Kiwi team matched their medal count from Tokyo, securing 20 medals in total. However, this time, they set a new record with ten gold medals—New Zealand's highest gold medal tally at any Olympic Games. Additionally, 45 of the 200 athletes are returning home with at least one medal, showcasing a remarkable level of success across the board.

Among the standout performers was Dame Lisa Carrington, who won three gold medals in Paris, bringing her career total to eight golds and one bronze. Carrington’s achievements have made her New Zealand’s most decorated Olympian ever.

Bishop commended the entire Olympic team for their extraordinary performances and sportsmanship, reflecting the values that New Zealand is celebrated for internationally. He emphasized that such success is the result of a collective effort, thanking Chef de Mission Nigel Avery and his team for their dedication in supporting the athletes, as well as the sponsors and donors whose contributions were crucial.

He also acknowledged the support from families, friends, and the wider community, whose encouragement played a vital role in the athletes’ journey.

Furthermore, Bishop highlighted the significant efforts of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, High Performance Sport NZ, and Sport NZ in preparing for the Games and looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The volunteer support at NZ House in Paris and the Athletes’ Village was also noted, with 75 volunteers welcoming over 15,000 visitors and nine dedicated to assisting the athletes.

In closing, Bishop expressed immense pride in the team’s achievements and the collective effort that made this Olympic success possible.
