LA Mayor Karen Bass will be presented with the Olympic flag by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo at the closing ceremony of the Paris Games on Sunday. This historic handover will officially begin the countdown to the LA Games in 2028.

The flag transfer is a key highlight of the ceremony, marking the first time a Black woman mayor has received it. 'To receive the flag is going to be a tremendous honour, knowing the first woman mayor of Paris will be handing me the flag,' Bass told reporters in Paris on Friday.

Bass added, 'I think it will be a historic moment and I will feel incredibly privileged to participate in it.' Enthusiastic fans and strong TV ratings have marked the Paris Games as a success. 'It seems like the whole city (Paris) is excited,' Bass said. 'There's a lot of joy, and I want to see that replicated.'

Los Angeles plans to showcase its multiculturalism and the glamor of Hollywood as it prepares for its own Games. 'It will be a challenge, but it will be a challenge we can step up to,' Bass said. 'Our Games will really show the diversity and international character of our city.'

Key challenges for LA include homelessness and transportation, issues that Bass has prioritized. Last month, the U.S. government pledged $900 million to enhance the city's rail and bus systems for the influx of visitors. Los Angeles is also slated to host other major sporting events, including World Cup soccer in 2026 and the Super Bowl in 2027, offering ample preparation opportunities for the Olympics.
