The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the epicenter was located 4 miles north of Malibu and 7 miles below the surface. Tremors were experienced up to 45 miles away in Orange County, where residents reported items moving in their homes.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that fire authorities and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services are assessing the city for any damages. Despite the shaking, Rene Vasquez, manager at Malibu's The Country Kitchen breakfast place, reported no damage. 'It wasn't that bad,' Vasquez remarked, 'Thank God nothing fell.'
