Chad Le Clos Eyes Redemption After Injury Ahead of Paris Games

South African swimmer Chad Le Clos revealed on Thursday that he had suffered a training injury ahead of the Paris Games, which he has referred to as unfinished business. The 32-year-old, who defeated U.S. giant Michael Phelps to win the 200-meter butterfly gold at London 2012, is participating in his fourth Olympic Games.

Le Clos is seeking a return to the medal podium after failing to secure one in Tokyo three years ago. Calling himself 'a bit of a pensioner' after his first short course world championship win in 2010, Le Clos has acknowledged several physical challenges over the years, including a recent injury.

'I had a bit of an incident,' Le Clos said regarding a training mishap. 'I suffered a small tear in my upper trapezius 16 days ago, but I'm fortunate to have amazing doctors and physios on the national team. We're doing everything we can, and I'm in fantastic shape. Here's hoping the best three guys win on the day.'

Despite the injury, Le Clos, who will swim the 100-meter butterfly, stated that he had 'let go of the past' and plans to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Games. 'I believe I will be in LA,' he mentioned during a World Aquatics press conference. 'Maybe not as competitive, but we'll see what happens.'

Reflecting on his Olympic career, Le Clos noted the success in London, earning two silvers in Rio, and a challenging fourth-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly. 'The next year, I won the world title in Budapest with a faster time, which was my redemption,' he added. 'This Olympics, for me, is about swimming the best that I can be.'
